Meet Maizie

Maizie is a sweet and loving girl! She is a golden retriever mix rescue pup, born at a wonderful foster home in June 2018. She is our 4th rescue dog and came to our family through Angels Among Us after her mom and dad were surrendered to a shelter. We were fortunate to be able to pick her from the litter and socialize her from a young age.

Don’t let Maizie’s ”bad-hair day” appearance fool you! She is supersoft! She naps often, gives big hugs and is relatively calm (she’s still a puppy after all!). Maizie loves cold weather, playing in her water bowl, and chewing her toys.

Maizie earned her Canine Good Citizen Certification in March 2019 and has completed extensive personalized and group therapy dog training with Peach on a Leash. Maizie is also up to date on all of her vaccinations and health needs.

Benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy

Incorporating animals in a therapeutic setting has many mental health benefits.

Interaction with a furry friend can help:

  • Reduce anxiety, fear, and depression

  • Lessen feelings of isolation and loneliness

  • Increase communication and socialization

  • Elicit feelings of joy and comfort

  • Stimulate the relaxation response resulting in a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure

  • Increase the release of oxytocin, prolactin and serotonin (“feel-good” hormones)

  • … and much more!

FAQ About Sessions with Maizie

  1. How will Maizie participate in our session? This will depend on a number of things. What we are working on and my clinical recommendation, your comfort level and interest in including Maizie in our work, and also Maizie’s desire to participate at any particular time.

  2. Does she shed? Although Maizie is not shedding much yet, I’m sure it is coming. She is bathed and brushed regularly to keep shedding to a minimum.

  3. Does she drool? Maizie does not drool like some breeds but does like to give kisses on occasion.

  4. Can I teach her a trick? Yes! Maizie loves learning new tricks!

  5. Can I bring her treats? I will have appropriate treats at the office for her and kindly ask that you not plan to feed her anything unfamiliar.

  6. What if I don’t like dogs? Maizie will only be at the office on certain days of the week. You will always have the option of scheduling your session on a different day.
